Meet Dr George J. Georgiou: Inventor of HMD®

Dr Georgiou

Researcher, naturopathic practitioner, educator and author

Dr George J. Georgiou, N.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. (AM), M.Sc., B.Sc., is the inventor and developer of HMD® and HMD LAVAGE®. His work draws upon more than four decades of experience in natural health, environmental medicine, detoxification, research and practitioner education.

Rather than approaching HMD® as simply another herbal supplement, Dr Georgiou developed it through a combination of scientific investigation, clinical observation, ingredient testing and a long-standing interest in how different natural substances may work together.

This research-led approach remains central to HMD®’s philosophy today.

A multidisciplinary approach to health

Dr Georgiou’s academic and professional background covers several interconnected disciplines, including biology, psychology, clinical psychology, naturopathic medicine and holistic health.

He has also undertaken extensive training in areas such as:

  • clinical nutrition;

  • medical herbalism;

  • naturopathy;

  • homoeopathic medicine;

  • iridology;

  • environmental health;

  • bioresonance;

  • electronic impulse therapies; and

  • complementary diagnostic methods.

This broad background helped shape his belief that health cannot always be understood by looking at a single symptom, organ or laboratory result in isolation. Nutrition, lifestyle, environmental exposure, emotional health and individual susceptibility may all form part of the wider picture.

This systems-based way of thinking eventually became an important influence on the development of HMD®.

Why Dr Georgiou developed HMD®

Dr Georgiou’s interest in heavy metals grew through years of clinical work with people experiencing complex and persistent health concerns.

He became increasingly interested in the effects of environmental exposure and in the practical limitations of some of the approaches available at the time. Many natural products relied heavily on one ingredient or focused on only one stage of the body’s elimination process.

Dr Georgiou wanted to investigate whether a carefully constructed combination of natural ingredients could provide a more complete form of daily detoxification support.

The development process involved assessing potential ingredients individually and in combination. Particular attention was given to ingredient compatibility, formulation ratios and the possibility of synergy—where a combination produces a different effect from that seen when each ingredient is examined separately.

This work eventually led to the development of the HMD® formulation, which combines specially prepared forms of Chlorella Growth Factor, cilantro, and chlorella in a liquid vegetable glycerin base.

The formula was designed to support the body’s normal detoxification and elimination processes as part of a broader wellness routine.

The research behind HMD®

Research has been an important part of the HMD® story from its earliest stages.

Dr Georgiou conducted a programme of investigation that included laboratory assessment, clinical observation and controlled human trials. The published papers describe double-blind, placebo-controlled research involving approximately 350 participants, together with further clinical observations and case material.

The research examined changes in selected toxic-element measurements and explored whether the complete HMD® formulation produced different results from its individual components.

One of the most interesting observations reported in this work was that the complete formulation appeared to behave differently from its ingredients when used individually. This supported Dr Georgiou’s original interest in the importance of formulation synergy rather than relying on a single so-called “detox ingredient.”

The research programme led to several published papers, including:

  1. Scientific Research on Natural Heavy Metal Chelators: Testing What Works
    Published in 2018, this paper discusses research into natural heavy-metal-binding substances and the performance of the combined HMD® formulation.

  2. Natural Heavy Metal Chelators: Do They Work?
    Published in 2007, this paper reports findings from the earlier stages of the HMD® research programme.

  3. A Natural Heavy Metal Chelator Is Born: Its Use in Paediatric Cases
    This 2007 paper presents clinical observations relating to the formulation’s use in selected paediatric cases. Any present-day use in children should only be considered with appropriate professional guidance.

  4. The Use of Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis in Clinical Decision-Making Regarding Heavy Metal Chelation
    Published in 2010, this paper examines the potential role of Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis as one component of a broader assessment and monitoring process.

The papers and available PDF copies can be viewed on the Published HMD® Research page.

These publications should be read as part of an evolving body of research. They do not mean that HMD® is intended to diagnose, treat or cure heavy-metal poisoning or any disease. Further independent research would always be valuable, particularly using larger study populations and modern analytical methods.

Nevertheless, the decision to publish the work allows practitioners, researchers and customers to examine the methods and findings rather than relying solely on marketing claims.

From research to a practical wellness system

Dr Georgiou’s work did not stop with the original HMD® formulation.

His clinical experience led him to view detoxification as a sequence of more than one physiological process. This contributed to the development of a broader three-part wellness approach:

  • Mobilise: HMD® is used as the principal daily detox-support formulation.

  • Eliminate: HMD LAVAGE® contains herbs traditionally used to support the body’s natural drainage and elimination pathways.

  • Bind: HMD® Chlorella provides chlorella as part of the wider daily routine.

This Mobilise–Eliminate–Bind concept is now the foundation of the HMD® Wellness Packs.

It reflects Dr Georgiou’s view that a responsible wellness programme should consider the body as a connected system and pay attention to nutrition, hydration, digestive function, and regular elimination.

Practitioner, educator and author

Dr Georgiou is the founder of the Da Vinci Holistic Health Centre and the Da Vinci Institute of Holistic Medicine in Larnaca, Cyprus.

At the Institute, he has worked to make naturopathic and holistic health education accessible to students and practitioners internationally. Its online programmes cover subjects such as naturopathy, herbal medicine, nutrition, environmental medicine, biological sciences, psychology and detoxification.

His interest in education arose from an extensive personal academic journey. After spending approximately 25 years studying at universities, colleges, and specialist training programmes, he wanted to organise this knowledge into practical courses that others could study from anywhere in the world.

Dr Georgiou has also written more than 20 books addressing natural health, detoxification, holistic medicine, psychology and personal development. His writing reflects the same central principle found in his clinical and research work: complex subjects should be explained clearly enough to become useful in everyday life.

The person beyond the research

Although research, writing and natural medicine have occupied much of Dr Georgiou’s professional life, his interests extend well beyond the clinic and laboratory.

He has a deep appreciation for Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance ideal of combining science, creativity, practical skill and artistic curiosity. This influence can be seen in the name of the Da Vinci Institute and in Dr Georgiou’s own varied interests.

Outside his professional work, he enjoys Byzantine iconography, using traditional egg tempera, playing the bouzouki, photography, horography (rebuilding antique pocket watches) and the restoration of classic cars. He is particularly interested in the engineering and craftsmanship of historic Rolls-Royce and Jaguar motorcars.

He also enjoys boating and practical marine projects—interests that combine mechanical problem-solving, careful design and the satisfaction of restoring or improving something with his own hands.

These pursuits may appear unrelated to natural health, but they reveal a consistent theme: curiosity about how things work and respect for the relationship between individual components and the complete system.

Whether examining the interaction of ingredients in a formulation, studying the construction of a classic motorcar or working on a piece of iconography, Dr Georgiou is drawn to the meeting point between precision, creativity and practical application.

A continuing commitment to investigation

For Dr Georgiou, the invention of HMD® was not the end of a research project. It became part of an ongoing investigation into environmental exposure, nutrition, natural ingredients, and the body’s normal elimination processes.

He continues to write educational articles, develop practitioner training and examine emerging research concerning environmental health and toxic-element exposure.

His guiding philosophy is straightforward: health information should encourage informed decisions rather than fear, and wellness products should be presented responsibly, with clear guidance and realistic expectations.

HMD® represents the practical outcome of that philosophy—a formulation developed through research, refined through experience and supported by an ongoing commitment to education.

“My aim has always been to bring together careful research, clinical experience and the intelligence of nature in a form that people can use practically and responsibly.”

Important note: Dr George Georgiou is a naturopathic practitioner, researcher and natural health educator. He is not a medically qualified doctor. HMD® is a dietary supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Anyone with suspected heavy-metal poisoning or a medical condition should seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
